RUAG qualifies CAST-easy for Tornado platform securing sale to the German Bundeswehr

Emmen, Switzerland, 08 March 2017. The RUAG Aviation CAST-easy (Countermeasure Advanced System Test Equipment) chaff and flare simulator solution is marking a milestone, twice over. The self-protection test equipment has successfully qualified for flight on the Tornado jet platform, as confirmed by partner Airbus Defence & Space. This success allowed RUAG Aviation to secure a significant mandate for CAST-easy from the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) for use with the Tornado fleet operated by the German Bundeswehr. CAST-easy is an unique, economical and reusable testing solution specifically designed to allow for safer testing of chaff and flare dispenser deployment, relying on electronics instead of pyrotechnics.

“Qualifying CAST-easy for the Tornado jet platform is an important and additional step in proving this simulator solution is suitable for any aircraft needing to rely on self-protection deployment options - jets, helicopters and transport aircraft,” states Benjamin Wepfer, General Manager Aviation Products, RUAG Aviation. “The rigorous qualification test procedures validate our chaff and flare simulator’s performance according to exacting requirements. Vibration and acceleration capabilities were of particular interest on the Tornado platform,” he confirms. “This qualification is further proof that CAST-easy is the safest, most reliable solution for testing dispenser units across the spectrum of demanding platforms,” Benjamin Wepfer explains further. CAST-easy supports all chaff and flare dispensers, independent of the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) model.

The electronic CAST-easy unit is highly durable, allowing for well over 2000 testing cycles, and the absence of pyrotechnics ensures safe operations, as well as deployment flexibility in terms of civil airspace. Lower operating costs are the result of a significantly lower logistical footprint. “CASTeasy greatly reduces the systematic risk associated with the testing of chaff and flare dispensers used for aircraft self-protection. This even includes the marked absence of debris produced by pyrotechnics, which eventually finds its way to the ground,” notes Benjamin Wepfer.

The ensuing delivery of CAST-easy simulator units to BAAINBw, on behalf of the German Bundeswehr, reinforces the existing partnership between RUAG Aviation and the Bundeswehr which goes back several years. BAAINBw has also purchased missim threat simulator testing units for the Tornado fleet as part of their efforts to bolster electronic warfare self-protection systems.

“Intelligent and enhanced safety is the ultimate objective when we consider the range of innovative self-protection solutions we develop on behalf of our customers,” emphasises Volker Wallrodt, Senior Vice President Business Jets, Dornier 228 & Components, RUAG Aviation. “Used in combination, as with missim and CAST-easy on the Tornado fleet for the German Bundeswehr, our solutions allow our customers to realise end-to-end electronic warfare system testing, starting with the sensors, and ending with the simulated ejection of chaff and flares.”
